6 simple maintenance tasks for home energy savings

The countdown to summer’s end is on. As the warm days wind down, it pays to begin thinking about fall fixes that can prepare your home for cooler weather. Add these simple projects to your to-do list to save on energy costs and maximize comfort when the heat comes on.

  1. Schedule a tune-up. Make an appointment to have your heating system professionally inspected and serviced before you start relying on it. A well-maintained heating system operates more effectively, helps lower monthly bills and reduces the chance of surprise breakdowns.
  2. Mind the gaps. Keep energy-robbing drafts at bay by filling cracks with caulk or spray insulation. Air escapes most often from: fireplaces, eaves, ridge vents, electrical outlets, light fixtures, floors, walls, ceilings, ducts, plumbing penetrations, doors, windows, fans and vents. Replace worn or insufficient weather stripping around doors and windows.
  3. Look up. Head to the attic to look for simple ways to save. Sealing up ductwork to close leaks, holes or poor connections can save a bundle on heating costs. Ensure attic access points, such as pull-down stairs or hatch covers, are well insulated to prevent warm air in the living space leaking into the attic.
  4. Reverse directions. Make sure ceiling fan blades are set to spin clockwise on low speed. This allows the fan ceiling fan to redistribute trapped warm air from the ceiling back down into the room.
  5. Focus on filters. Set a monthly reminder to check or clean dirty air filters to keep your heating system operating at peak efficiency.
  6. Clear the way. Blocking the flow of warm air causes your system to run longer cycles. Make sure there are no draperies, carpeting or furniture blocking return/supply vents and registers. Vacuum any debris or accumulated dust around the vents.

Prioritizing energy efficiency on your list of fall maintenance projects will keep you and your budget comfortable all winter.
